Swim Report – November 25, 2010 – Happy Thanksgiving!

Here we are post swim at around 8:30am for our traditional Thanksgiving Morning Miler. Nick and I just exited the water at this point, and Brian was there to capture it all for his documentary. The water seemed colder than the 47F thermometer reading, and the air temp was a brisk 42F (and falling). Brrr…..!

Also present for the holiday swim was Joe Spallone, Lake Monster #92, who swims with the Dolphin Club out in San Francisco. Way to go, Joe!

  1. Steve,
Fun to meet you and the site finally. Had a chilling swim for about 4 minutes. The coldest water I had swam in prior where I swim (SF Bay) was 49 degrees a couple years ago, but we take showers and sauna immediately afterward. I will say this day seemed far colder than 49 degrees, but incremental temp changes do seem large in my experience. My hands and feet were cold immediately, which is never the case for my usual swims in 50-58 water, so I knew I’d better get out. My stroke slowed after a few minutes and I never was able to put my face in consistently. Still, it was a good time nonetheless and no harm came from the swim (though, I did spit up some blood tasting saliva). Email me for info on where to send the Lake Monster thing. Hope to see you next Thanksgiving, and perhaps soon this summer. And if you’re in the San Francisco area and want to swim in Aquatic Park, let me know.
    Joe

    1. Hey Joe! Good to meet you as well! We’ve taken some additional temperature readings since then, and we’re estimating that the lake temp that morning was closer to the 43F – 45F range. I’ll definitely let you know when I’m back in SF for a swim. You can reach out to me at srhernan@gmail.com. Best, Steve

  2. THE WEATHER MAN LIED… THEY CALLED 24 TO 35 MPH WINDS FROM THE SOUTH EAST AND 5 TO 7 FOOT WAVES THIS MORNING. THE LAKE WAS MIRROR FLAT AND I TOOK OFF AT 7:20 AM SO BRIAN COULD SHOOT SOME MORE SWIM FOOTAGE. I AGREE BOTH STEVE AND ME TOOK THE TEMP TO SEE IT DROPPED INTO THE 30’S , IT FELT COLD BUT WAS 47 BOTH THERMOMETERS. THEN I RECALLED HOW I FORGOT TO EAT, DRINK AND SLEEP ENOUGH. IT WAS A NICE SWIM THOUGH.
    HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY O.W.C. !
