Swim Report – July 7, 2018 – Post Holiday Chops

The lakefront was shut down on Friday due to heavy surf and dangerous currents, so I didn’t know if Saturday morning would be a go. Fortunately, Lake Michigan calmed down substantially overnight giving us a swimmable lake at 5:20am.

When I got to L1, there were still some rather vigorous chops, but we had a perfectly clear morning and an absolutely breathtaking sunrise. The lake temperature came in at a fiery 66.6F – almost as good as it gets – so I went with just my jammers and goggles. Gotta love the minimalism of summer!

The journey to Oak Street Beach proved to be challenging as we were swimming into a current coming from the southeast which also kept pushing us towards the side wall the entire time in the water. So by the time I made my beach landing, I was pretty exhausted and very much looking forward to walking back!

It was still very early in the morning by the time we got back to L1, so we hung out a while and chatted as the “second shift” of swimmers showed up. Given that we were so close to the July 4th holiday, many people were still out of town on vacation. This meant that we basically had the whole lakefront to ourselves – not that any of us minded!
