I knew when I got out to L1 that it was going to be an amazing morning. There were a number or professional photographers already out by the lakefront – a telling sign that the conditions were ripe for a one-of-a-kind sunrise. And it didn’t disappoint!
The lake temperature came in at a balmy 70F with a very slight northern breeze giving us a faint ripple on the surface. But the clear water coupled with the stunning backdrop of the skyline in the morning light made this one of the best swims so far this season.
Below are some of this morning’s pics, including shots of several new Lake Monsters (congrats to all!). More to come!
The former “Green Town, IL” (a.k.a. Waukegan) resident and master storyteller is 90 years young today!
When I was a boy in the Midwest I used to go out and look at the stars at night and wonder about them.
I guess every boy does that.
When I wasn’t looking at the stars, I was running in my old or my brand-new tennis shoes, on my way to swing in a tree, swim in a lake, or delve in the town library to read about dinosaurs or time machines.
I guess every boy has done that, too…
The stars are yours, if you have the head, the hands, and the heart for them.
The 80% chance of thunderstorms predicted for this morning turned out to be nothing more than a slight rain that stopped by the time I reached L1. The lake temperature came in at 68F, but it was about 7F to 10F colder below the “swim layer.”
Cedric and new Lake Monster Jeff joined me out at the swim site, and Beth showed up a bit later. I went sans wetsuit and was just fine as long as I stayed horizontal. We had a mostly uneventful out-and-back miler with a short drizzle on the return leg just to keep things lively.
I met up with Joe at L1 for a quick swim this morning. The conditions were ideal – 68F water temperature, mirror flat surface, and a water clarity that seriously rivaled what I saw two weeks ago in Lake Superior.
We did an out-and-back to Oak Street Beach, all the while amazed at how far we could see in all directions underwater. Without a doubt, this was one of the best swims of the year!
I decided to get some miles in on the road bike today, so I pedaled way west of the Air Show mess and down to Hyde Park. By that time, the early afternoon sun had become pretty intense with the outside air temperature coming in at around 92F.
I saw a rather festive and friendly crowd gathered on the south end of Promontory Point. So I did the only logical thing and got in with them! The water was perfect – est. temperature of 70F:
