Swim Report – August 7, 2022 – Thermocline Surprise

I got out to the lakefront a bit earlier than usual on Sunday, so I managed to catch the amazing colors that preceded the sunrise. The lake came in at 71.6F (surface), and I was expecting it to be uniformly temperate like the prior week. Boy was I mistaken!

My thermometer read correctly, but only because it was measuring the water temperature within the first 12 inches. Everything below that was probably about 10F or more colder (ugh)! So it was quite a rude awakening when we all first got in.

But fortunately, the lake was calm and the outside temperature was a balmy 78F. I did my usually out-and-back and got in my 1/2 mile – albeit a bit quicker than on most days!
