Swim Report – January 19, 2025 – Polar Vortex Edition

The polar vortex came in with a vengeance over the weekend, giving us an 8F air temp at 7:15am. But, miraculously, the lake did not freeze over and was still holding steady at 33F. I had to spend a few extra minutes de-icing the ladder to access the lake, but it once done, it was a pretty straightforward swim.

I managed to get in just under 1/4 mile until I ran into an ice sheet (literally). In-swim was quite pleasant as it was about 25 degrees Fahrenheit warmer in the lake than the outside air. But post-swim was a mad scramble to get changed into my dry clothes while the bitter cold air nipped mercilessly at my exposed hands. Other than that, I couldn’t have asked for a better morning!
