Swim Report – July 20, 2008 – Extreme sports edition

Once again, the lucky weather pattern repeated itself at L1…

The water temperature reading came in at 68F under flawless skies. I opted for a wetsuit, although I probably would have been fine without one. However, once the storm clouds moved in, the lake temperatures dropped quite noticeably. It seems like the “golden hour” for lake swimming is indeed 6:30am – 7:30am. Any time after that is touch and go…

  1. Hi John. I sent you a separate message, but yes – there are typically lots of people at OSB in the mornings this time of year. Definitely check it out!

  2. I am going to be in Chicago for a short visit this week and am looking for a place to do a training swim. I stumbled across your website while surfing the web. I was hoping I might bother you with a quick question or two. I will be travelling on Tuesday but will be looking to swim on Wednesday morning. As I will be staying near Ohio Beach at the Affinia Hotel, I was hoping to swim there. (The photos are spectacular by the way.). Are there folks that train at the beach early in the mornings (6 AM or so) during the week?

I am an experienced open water swimmer in both the lakes and ocean in southern Maine. I don’t mind if I can’t hook up with a group but I am careful about swimming completely alone. Also, can I get by without a wetsuit in the mornings? I would assume so but thought it best to ask.

    Thanks, John

  3. Hey Amanda! Congrats on finishing Harbor Lights! We’ll be there on Sunday, same time and place, so come on out!

  4. Hi Steve! You’re brave to take your camera so close to the water. Natalie and I did Harbor Lights. The weather cleared up for it. I hope to see you next week.
