I arrived at Ladder #1 just a little after 6:00am. The air temperature was in the 70F’s, but a steady breeze combined with overcast skies and a moderate drizzle made everything seem like a late September morning.
I jumped in with my jammers and thermo shirt, and I decided to also wear a thicker latex swim cap. This turned out to be a good move as the water temperature had dropped significantly since Wednesday. Once again, I found myself swimming in a two to three foot layer of warmer water (est. 63F – 65F) with much colder water below that depth. So be forewarned – the thermoclines are back (at least for today)!
Evanston Lighthouse Beach was 54 yesterday morning. I waded out in my jammer and did a couple of laps before I couldn’t feel my feet. Not good. Big headache. Lifeguard told me S/SW winds are pushing up cold lake water against the shore. Said breezes from the shore onto the lake warm it up.
Weird to go to the beach on a 88/90 degree day and see *nobody* in the lake (unless its e-coli).
Steve
What type of swim cap? My head and ears were cold yesterday when I swam?
Thanks.
Jayme
Hi Jayme. I had a thicker latex swim cap that I got when I did the Golden Gate Bridge swim. The ones that you get at the events are the thin caps that really don’t keep your head warm in water 55F or colder.
Hey Steve…was that ur bike locked up to Ladder #1 this morning ?
